"Grief is not the opposite of joy. It is often evidence that we have loved deeply.”
-Joy Blanchard
Approaching Grief with Joy
Rooted in the Joyology belief that all emotions deserve expression, this workshop explores grief not as the opposite of joy, but as an essential part of a wholehearted life. When acknowledged and expressed, grief can become a doorway to connection, gratitude, resilience, and healing.
A Nature-Based Ritual Workshop with Joy Blanchard
There are moments in life that change us.
The loss of a loved one. The end of a relationship. A move. A diagnosis. A child leaving home. The closing of one chapter and the uncertain beginning of another.
Yet modern life offers few meaningful ways to pause, honor these transitions, and allow our grief to be witnessed.
Morning Alters
This workshop is inspired by the Morning Altars practice developed by artist and teacher Day Schildkret and informed by Joy Blanchard's training and certification in this nature-based ritual methodology.
This experiential workshop invites participants into a sacred space where nature, creativity, ritual, and reflection come together. Through a hands-on altar-building practice using gathered natural materials, participants are guided through a process of expressing, honoring, and transforming grief into something tangible, beautiful, and meaningful.
No artistic experience is necessary. Only curiosity, openness, and a willingness to slow down.

A Community Ritual of Remembrance, Creativity & Connection
This becomes less about "learning" and more about:
honoring loved ones
building a communal altar
storytelling
remembrance
music
tea
prayer
celebration of lives lived
Why Nature-Based Ritual?
The altar itself is temporary.
Constructed from leaves, stones, flowers, branches, feathers, and found objects, it exists only for a brief moment before returning to the earth.
Its impermanence becomes part of the teaching.
Through creating something beautiful and then releasing it, participants experience a gentle reminder that grief, love, memory, and change are all part of life's natural rhythms.
The practice offers a simple, portable ritual that can be repeated anywhere—in a backyard, on a walk, at a graveside, or during a meaningful life transition.
